CORPUS CHRISTI- A federal lawsuit has been filed in Corpus Christi over the deaths of whooping cranes at the Aransas Wildlife Refuge.
A conservation group called the Aransas Project is suing the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality claiming their policies have contributed to a die off of the endangered whooping crane colony.
The suit alleges the TCEQ allowed excessive amounts of water to be drawn from rivers harming the birds in violation of the Endangered Species Act.
The Aransas Project claims that water draw off dried up food and water supplies and led to the deaths of a record 23 whooping cranes last year.
Wildlife officials have blamed the die off on last year’s severe drought.
