The Aransas Project (TAP) has announced the formation of a newly created board of advisors. Comprised of seven leaders from the Texas coastal community, these advisors bring additional local voices and varied expertise to TAP’s efforts to ensure freshwater flows to the bays and estuaries that protect the winter habitat of the endangered whooping crane.
Members of the board of advisors are: V. W. “Brink” Brinkerhoff, Art Dohmann, James Fox, Jane Guinn, Al Johnson, Pat Moore, and Betty Stiles.
TAP Regional Director Ron Outen said, “We are very pleased to welcome this distinguished group of community leaders to the TAP board of advisors. Their involvement acknowledges the community’s recognition of how vital the issue of ensuring freshwater flows to the bays and estuaries that protect the winter habitat of the endangered whooping crane is to us all. We look forward to working with them and gaining from their impressive depth of experience and knowledge.”
TAP’s board of advisors represents the continued growth and diverse membership of the organization, which has unified a diverse alliance of municipalities, businesses, organizations and citizens behind the goal of ensuring freshwater flows to the bays and estuaries to protect the winter habitat of the endangered whooping crane.
In March 2010, TAP filed a federal lawsuit against several officials of the Texas Commission on Envrionmental Quality in their official capacities for illegal harm and harassment of whooping cranes at and adjacent to Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in violation of the Endangered Species Act. TAP seeks a process to ensure the crane’s habitat and food sources in the bays and estuaries are protected during times of low flows.
